Patrick A. Ongley, a native of New Zealand, came to the United States in 1951. Ongley graduated from Harvard Medical School with a specialty in cardiovascular disease. He served as Director of the China Medical Board (under Oliver R. McCoy) from 1970 to 1973 and later became CMB’s President. During Ongley’s tenure as President, CMB returned to China and resumed its support of medical education there after a 30 year absence. In 1981, Ongley received an Honorable Doctor of Medicine degree from Her Royal Highness Princess Sirinthorn of Thailand.
